This area is accessed via the Snowy Mountains Highway, via Adaminaby to the east or Tumut to the west. You can camping on Friday night can be at the caravan park at Old Adaminaby, turn left a kilometre or so west of Adaminaby and drive another 7 km. For the trips suggested, park at Mt Selwyn ski resort car park (GR 306 253).
We will look at two trips in the area - a day trip and a weekend (two-day) trip.
Features visited by these trips:
Four Mile Hut
Tabletop Mountain
Temperance Creek
Northern approach to Happy Jacks Plain, Brooks Hut
Skiing Standard
Skiing is generally easy, but there is some skiing in trees, particularly on the two-day trip. This area is quite low, ranging to as low as 1300m, so you need to pick your time. You can tell snow conditions readily by looking up Mt Selwyn resort ski report.
Day Trip
Mt Selwyn to Four Mile Hut, or to Tabletop Mountain for parties with intermediate skills and good fitness. Maps: Denison and Mt Selwyn Ski Touring, 1:25,000 Ski from the Mt Selwyn resort base area up the hill and follow the fire trail through trees for about one km, then on an open ridge top to meet the Table Top Mountain Fire Trail. Follow this south to Four Mile Saddle at GR 325 228. Good luck with the fire trail going down the hill around GR 327 234 -it is easy to keep too far left and have to do some scrub bashing.
Once at the saddle turn left and either ski through trees to the hut, or follow the open part of the side creek to the junction at GR 333 231 then ski back up Four Mile Creek, or ski through trees direct to Four Mile Hut.
If going on to Tabletop Mountain, ski straight ahead at the saddle and follow the fire trail. The trail is difficult to pick up south of Milkmans Flat, and many parties ski up the spur that runs down to Milkmans Flat and ski along the open ridge top. Either way requires some skiing through trees.
The views form the top of Tabletop are fabulous! You return along your outward path, or make variations as desired.
Overnight Trip
To Brooks Hut and return- for parties with intermediate skills and reasonable fitness. You will need the Eucumbene 1:50,000 map in addition to those needed for the day trip.
Follow the instructions for the Tabletop Mountain trip to Tabletop Mountain, and follow the fire trail beyond Tabletop. One can either leave the fire trail and ski down Temperance Creek, or follow the fire trail to around GR 376 163, then head for the marked crest at 1681m elevation.
From there head to Arsenic Ridge. There is some tree skiing and some parities will be more comfortable (and safer) removing their skis in parts of the descent.
Brooks is a small but clean and will sleep 8 on double-decker platform. It has a toilet and there is water from a soak near hut.
