Navigating in a White-out
Back to Archive index
In a white-out and where there are few navigational aids such as rivers, creeks, or ridge-tops that go in the direction of travel, navigate by using short legs to easily found features. This will minimise mistakes made in following bearings. It may take longer but you will get there with less worry and quite often you will visit places you would normally bypass. The enjoyment of most trips is in the places you see on your way and not just the destination.
Leading trips: Always appoint a whip when traveling in bad weather, or through thick vegetation, or when you have a large party. (More than 4-6) Instruct the whip to stay with the last member of the party. Count your party regularly and in between times, check that you can see your whip.
