Waxing Lyrically About Waxing
Back to Archive index
The greatest benefit to the speed of your skis is not going to be determined by the expensive waxes you may put on but how you put them on. The speed of a ski especially over a long distance, is determined by how deep you can penetrate the wax into the base. This makes the ski base moist and better for gliding. The warmer a base the deeper the penetration. So before waxing leave your skis in a warm place (don't leave them on your roof racks on a cold Jindabyne night) and wax in a room that is a temperature of at least 16 C (the Nordic Shelter is a bad spot for doing waxing before a race).
When you do your ironing of waxes, iron in each layer for at least 3-5 mins per ski. This will warm up the base and get deep wax penetration into the base. Also remember that if you see smoke or fumes coming off the base , the iron is too hot. It takes 20 layers of wax and scraping before a ski will begin to reach its potential . So if you have new skis, that is how long it is going to take.
